Weather Icons

A Set Of Weather Icons Representing Various Climatic Conditions

A designer must constantly be on the lookout for novel artistic approaches and forms of expression. When you take in a new piece of art, you can’t help but feel inspired to produce something original on your own. One of the outcomes of that frame of mind, which was to test the waters with something newer, is this icon sheet. A sheet containing nine icons that collectively depict the various climatic conditions that can be experienced throughout the year. These conditions are as follows: sunny, cloudy, overcast, thunder, thunder storm, wind, rainy, drizzling, and snowy.

Both the iOS and Android operating systems benefit from these icons’ compatibility. Every icon has a circular base, and within that base is a representation of the sky in a variety of conditions, as well as rays of light that serve to emphasize the icon’s clarity. I decided to apply shadows individually to each part of the design in order to achieve the greatest possible amount of depth in the design. This helped to generate a cut out effect, which ultimately resulted in enhanced depth and readability to each shape and form individually.

Because we almost never find the sky to be constant and uniform, I decided against using solid colours that were uniform, and instead I experimented with creating various weather conditions by combining different kinds of colours in the form of a gradient. Some of the color schemes were arrived at by striking a balance between various monochromatic harmonies, but only a few of the combinations were produced by fusing contrasting warm and cool types of colors. I also did some research on the size guidelines for this type of icon set, and I discovered that the smallest readable size for this icon set ought to be 256 by 256 pixels. This is to ensure that every detail and effect is appropriately accounted for in the design.
